The provocatively glammed-up New York Dolls were proto-punk darlings. The New York City band left a massive impression on rock music with their notoriously chaotic shows and larger-than-life on-stage charisma. Their peak lineup, which recorded just two studio albums before disbanding in 1975, included vocalist David Johansen—who would later be known as the ’80s lounge-singer Buster Poindexter—guitarists Johnny Thunders and Sylvain Sylain, with Arthur Kane on bass and Jerry Nolan on drums.

Despite their brief five-year run and a lack of contemporary commercial success, the New York Dolls’ musical legacy includes a who’s who of alternative music. The Smiths’ Morrissey was the head of the band’s original UK Fanclub and also helped to reunite the surviving Dolls in 2004. Covers of their first single “Personality Crisis” have been recorded by Sonic Youth and Teenage Fanclub, and the band was significantly portrayed in the HBO series “Vinyl.”
