The Velvet Underground was an American rock band formed in 1964 in New York City by singer/guitarist Lou Reed, multi-instrumentalist John Cale, guitarist Sterling Morrison, and drummer Angus MacLise. The band was briefly managed by pop artist Andy Warhol and they served as the house band at the Factory and Warhol’s Exploding Plastic Inevitable events from 1966 to 1967. Their debut album The Velvet Underground & Nico was released to poor sales but has become critically acclaimed as the most prophetic rock album ever made. The integration of rock and the avant-garde included provocative subject matter, musical experiments explored in the band’s influential work, and is considered the primary foundation for punk rock and new wave music.
White Light/White Heat is the second studio album released in 1968. It was the band’s last studio recording of new material. The album's aggressive feel was a direct response to the rising flower-power from the“Summer of Love.” The album is thought to be about methamphetamine, but it may have also been partly inspired by Lou Reed’s interest in metaphysics. The shirt features the real album cover art of a black and white portrait of the band.
