Careless Hearts shift the focus to the rock and roll side of their musical personality on Alum Rock, the band's third full-length album. Recorded in San Jose, CA and mixed in Nashville, TN by producer Brad Jones (Hayes Carll, Chuck Prophet, Steve Earle, Matthew Sweet), Alum Rock is a testament to the continuous creative evolution of the group. Showing a broader span of influences on Alum Rock than ever before, songs range from the familiar twang of 'Talking Backwards' to the more jagged and cranked-up rock of 'My Darling Tracy' and 'Lifeline.' Careless Hearts blend several decades worth of FM radio obsession on Alum Rock to create a unique mixture - there are hints here of everything from Thin Lizzy to The Replacements; Nick Lowe to Neil Young; Willie Nelson to Nirvana. Recorded last winter with the help of long-time collaborator and friend Müller (Mumlers, Doctor Nurse), Careless Hearts set out to make Alum Rock a cohesive album that speaks directly to their place and time-San Jose, circa 2013. The two tracks that open the album, 'Push the World' and 'Bascom Ave.' are cases in point. In 'Push the World' singer/songwriter Paul Kimball explores complicated feelings about San Jose's long-struggling creative community, and in 'Bascom Ave.' he grapples with the inherent hypocrisies of modern parenthood out in his neck of the South Bay suburban sprawl. The band named the album Alum Rock after the eponymous San Jose neighborhood and park to further cement the local connection-a rock album rooted in San Jose could scarcely have a more appropriate title.
