If there's anyone who knows how to write a solid hook to hang a song on, it's Winnipeg singer/songwriter Sandy Taronno. While he's penned his fair share of soaring, radio-friendly gems with his critically acclaimed pop-rock band Quinzy, his new solo project, Indicator Indicator, finds him working outside of the pop bubble, experimenting with new textures and arrangements but not at the expense of those indelible hooks. Indicator Indicator's self-titled debut EP, is a six-song slice of smart alt-pop that combines the melodicism and intimacy of Elliott Smith, the electro-pop hooks of The Postal Service, and the deconstructionist fussiness of Wilco and Spoon. From album opener My Love Don't Belong to the moody - to the earworm indie pop anthem - to January First, an ode to new beginnings replete with a sing-along na-na chorus, atmospheric This Place is a Factory, 'Indicator Indicator' both connects with and challenges the listener. Of course, Sandy's no stranger to ambitious projects - this is a guy, after all, who wrote a fully realized three-part EP series with Quinzy and annually helms Quinzmas, a hugely popular alternative Christmas show in his hometown of Winnipeg. Indicator Indicator is the exciting (and logical) next step for this forward-thinking artist.
